A Lifetime of Crafting!
Always a crafter, I love making things with my hands! Starting at
age 10 with macrame belts and plant hangers (and selling them at
a consignment store), I then progressed to dress-making during
high school. With mounting piles of fabric scraps gathering in my
parents' basement, the summer following my graduation I cut them
into many 4" squares and created a twin-size patchwork quilt which
kept me warm for many years!
Once living on my own, and even until now, making soft home
furnishings continues my handcrafting creative outlet. From
cushion covers, curtains, fitted sofa slipcovers with piping,
tablecloths, duvet covers, crib padding covers with matching
linens, chair seat covers with piping or braided trim, to quilted
wall hangings, and more.
Other handcrafting endeavors include stained glass projects,
lingerie, children's clothing (I have 4 kids!), carry-all bags
(especially using scraps, upholstery samples, & bolt-ends from the
fabric store), fabric gift bags, doll clothes, children's & adults'
costumes, knitting, crocheting, rug-hooking (remember that?!),
embroidery, cross stitch . . . I always have some handcrafting
project on the go!
Please know that I am NOT Martha Stewart! I cannot cook or
garden. Not everything I've made has turned out well, but I've
loved the process of working with my hands in an attempt to
create something beautiful and useful!
Crafting expresses many things about me:
a love of colour
an appreciation for structure in construction
that function & utility can be beautiful
a sense of satisfaction that I created my surroundings
a willingness to try any craft
a desire to recycle or reuse fabrics & other supplies
